AOTD - The Cinematic Orchestra - Ma Fleur

"The Cinematic Orchestra is a British-based jazz and electronic outfit, created in the late 1990s by Jason Swinscoe. The band is signed to Ninja Tune. The Cinematic Orchestra's sound, in both live and studio contexts, employs a live band which improvises along with a turntablist and electronic elements such as samples provided by Swinscoe.

Ma Fleur is the fourth full-length release and third proper studio album by The Cinematic Orchestra, released in 2007. The album is less jazz-influenced than the band's previous albums, but still retains their familiar downtempo sound."

Neither jazz nor trip-hop nor any other label you can think of, Ma Fleur is an immensely moving, and strongly distinct in the sound that comes across. Where as much as you hear is just as important as what you don't hear. a sense of space, vastness, but always comforting. The songs flow beautifully softly merging from one to the next dragging you deeper into its spell, starting off with the hair raising tingle of the power piano ballad that is "To Build A Home" The haunting vocals of "Breathe", The whimsical cast of arrangements throughout, And a sense of depth that only grows after repeat listens. Ma Fleur is a great album that should be heard by all who just need to get away everyonce in awhile.

MOTD - Interview

"After falling out with his editor, a fading political journalist is forced to interview America's most popular soap actress."

This movie was originally made in the Netherlands back in 2002 by Director Theo Van Gogh. The story fallows Pierre Peters played by Steve Buscemi (who also co-wrote and Directed this version), as a political journalist who is given a job to interview a movie celebrity Katya played by Sienna Miller. after meeting in a resturant the night ends abruptly as the two instantly dislike each other, but by a chance happening they "bump" into each other again after an accident outside the resturant. Katya invites the rattled reporter up to her flat, were Pierre decides he is going to get his story one way or another. A chess battle insues with one trying to outsmart the other in a game of wits. Seeing as the large bulk of this movie takes place in one room the script does a good job of keeping the flow going. The banter between Buscemi and Miller is the focal point of the film and the two do come across with some chemesty even if they aren't necessarily a match made in heaven. The plot thickens leading up to a final twist and overall leaves a satisfied viewing. Buscemi is Great and Miller also does a fine job with her role as the seemingly shallow actress. Another good one from Sony Pictures Classics.

AOTD - Kid Koala - Some of My Best Friends Are DJs

"Eric San, from Vancouver, Canada who records under the name Kid Koala, is a Montreal, Quebec based DJ and turntablist. He is signed to the British Ninja Tune record label, is a member of jam band Bullfrog and alternative hip hop supergroup Deltron 3030, and his new project The Slew. He has also made appearances with many other artists from Amon Tobin to the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and has made contributions to Lovage, Peeping Tom, Gorillaz, and numerous other projects."

Some of My Best Friends Are DJs was the second album released by Kid Koala. It was released in 2003 threw Ninja Tune.
Kid Koala is a scratch king, no doubt about it. His strong sense of melody and arrangement push the bounds of his records further than most dj's could hope. Some of My Best Friends is composed of one layer after the other but never going overboard into the mundane. the album opener, "Basin Street Blues," begins with a scratched in bassline that progresses all the way to a louisiana, New Orleans style blues tune, and it goes together perfectly, using his table to create the horn percussion. The rest of the album continues with the head of steam the opener built with songs like "Skanky Panky" which again with its horn solo's aand multi-layed rhythm's all blending together to form one cohesive unit. Full of crazy samples, and scratch filled recordings there is alot to like if your a fan of the DJ. Even the CD packaging is well done with a comic book also done by Kid included, and even alittle chess board on the back with cut out pieces to play with, which is a neat touch.

MOTD - The Fall

"In a hospital on the outskirts of 1920s Los Angeles, an injured
stuntman begins to tell a fellow patient, a little girl with a broken
arm, a fantastical story about 5 mythical heroes. Thanks to his
fractured state of mind and her vivid imagination, the line between
fiction and reality starts to blur as the tale advances."

the cinematography in this film is quite simpley stunning. The colors,
the framing, the costumes, the lighting, the backdrops everything is
gorgeous, and if you see this film for one reason, the cinematography
is enough to grab you and hold your attention. But underneath its
beauty lies a deeper story that many have felt requires multiple
viewings to really get everything out of it, which is a positive thing
as it shows director Tarsem Singh (The Cell) is in firm control and
manages to get everything he wants out of the film. The Fall is a
fantastical, charming story with layers of haunting undertones
throughout, I don't want to spoil anything within the film so I just
reccomend that you give it a watch.

AOTD - Phantogram - Eyelid Movies

Phantogram is an American electronic rock duo from Greenwich, New York, founded in 2007, consisting of guitarist Josh Carter and keyboardist Sarah Barthel.

"We wanted to incorporate all our own influences and created our own sound that's a combination of Serge Gainsbourg, sampling and Detroit hip-hop. In interviews, the band has described their sound concisely under the genre of "street beat, psych pop."

This first album from the new york duo is a promising start, Full of odd arrangements, brassy samples, plenty of beats, indie roots, hip hop roots all thrown together to make an intriguing combination. The first two singles "Mouthful of Diamonds" and "When I'm Small" are both strong , Mouthful offering a blend of synthesizer and enticing female vocals, while When I'm Small has a more dance, trip hop kinda beat to it and is a stand out of mine on the album. Other stand out's include a 3rd single Running from the Cops and As Far As I Can See. A talented duo that looks to have a bright future, there album is currently available online with an expected Feb 2010 street date.

MOTD - Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

"A petty thief posing as an actor is brought to Los Angeles for an unlikely audition and finds himself in the middle of a murder investigation along with his high school dream girl and a detective who's been training him for his upcoming role..."

Character development, narrative drive, drama, tension, dramatic irony, backstory, confrontation scenes, plot twists... Kiss Kiss has all of it. Released in 2005, Directed by Shane Black (Lethal Weapon) KKBB is another strong entry by Black and was one of the suprising Action/Thriller/Comedies that year. Full of tongue in cheek humor, One liners and strong performances by Robert Downey Jr (who also does the narration), and Val Kilmer as the gay detective Gay Perry. KKBB is an enjoyable watch that flows from one scene to the next, and is one to check out if you missed it way back when.

AOTD - Frank Zappa - Zoot Allures

"Zoot Allures is a 1976 rock album by Frank Zappa. This was Zappa's only release on the Warner Bros. Records label. Due to a lawsuit with his former manager Herb Cohen Frank Zappa's recording contract was temporarily re-assigned from DiscReet Records to Warner Bros.

The title is a pun on the French expression "Zut alors!" which, though it has no direct translation, conveys mild surprise and may be approximated by "Damn it!" or the British use of "Blimey!"

The album was originally conceptualized as a double LP, but for unknown reasons Zappa rearranged, edited, and shortened the track listing to what was eventually released as a single LP."

Many Zappa fans have mixed reactions with this album because it's a departure from his previous work. alittle more pop, a diffrent sound but it also features some of Zappa's classic songs like Disco Boy. Not to mention the classics Torture Never Stops, Black Napkins and the title track Zoot Allures which became signatures for Zappa over his career. Fallowed by a strong supporting cast from the rest of the tracks on the album and you have a well rounded classic Zappa Release.

MOTD - Punch Drunk Love

"Punch-Drunk Love (2002) is the American romantic comedy-drama written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, starring Adam Sandler and Emily Watson, with Philip Seymour Hoffman and Luis Guzmán.

Sandler won positive reviews for his role in his first major departure from the broader comedies that had made him a star. Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times that "Sandler, liberated from the constraints of formula, reveals unexpected depths as an actor. Watching this film, you can imagine him in Dennis Hopper roles. He has darkness, obsession and power." He won Best Actor at the Gijón International Film Festival and received a Golden Globe nomination."

Sander plays a small time Businessman, whose ultra passive behaviour hides a sense or rage within his personality that sometimes overboils in fits of anger. Growing up with seven sisters hasn't been kind to him and is mainly the route of his problems, his way with women, his social outcast, he is simpley a person who does not know how to handle things.
This was a breakout role for sandler and I still think his best performance to date along with Reign on Me, because it showed that yes he can act and he isn't just happy gilmore. Emily Watson is equally good and the two share some great chemestry together on screen. The directing and Cinematography are both top notch and the art style of the now deceased Jeremy Blake is superb and really adds another dimension to the film. Not to mention the great Philip Seymour Hoffman and his small cameo role. A Favorite of mine for alot of years that everyone should check out.

AOTD - The Hold Steady - Stay Positive

"The Hold Steady is a Brooklyn-based rock band comprising Craig Finn (vocals, guitar), Tad Kubler (lead guitar), Franz Nicolay (keyboards, vocals, harmonica, accordion), Galen Polivka (bass) and Bobby Drake (drums). The band's style has been described as a "riff-heavy mixture of classic rock," notable for its "lyrically dense storytelling."[1] To date, the band has released four studio albums: Almost Killed Me (2004), Separation Sunday (2005), Boys and Girls in America (2006), and Stay Positive (2008)."

Stay Positive is the fourth studio album by The Hold Steady, released on July 15, 2008. Vocalist/guitarist Craig Finn notes that the album is about "the idea of ageing gracefully, keeping going, perseverance, and how to stay true to the ideals and ideas you had when you were younger."

As a new fan of the Hold Steady I was plesantly suprised with this group. The band sometimes comes off as springsteen, tragiclly hip like and the songs on this album are quite catchy but dense at the same time. My favorite tracks, one for sure would have to be "Lord, I'm Discouraged" The Ballad track with a Slash worthy solo thrown in for good measure. I love the solo in this track and wish the band would invest alittle more time into racking up the guitar, but the only other solo to be had on the album comes on the track "Joke About Jamacia" with a Framptonesque talk box. Nevertheless the album as a hole is great. The other stand out to check out is the closing track "Slapped Actress" which just drags you in with its churning guitar and simple piano which complement each other nicely and make it a track you will come back to over and over. There is also a bonus track which actualy turns out to be three songs in one, and are included on the LE digipak version of the album.

MOTD - Thank You For Smoking

"Satirical comedy follows the machinations of Big Tobacco's chief spokesman, Nick Naylor, who spins on behalf of cigarettes while trying to remain a role model for his twelve-year-old son. "

Thank You For Smoking, released in 2005 is a comedy from director Jason Reitman (Up in the Air, Juno) about the "evil" Nick Naylor a spokesman for big tobacco as it fallows him tryin to sell tobacco to the world, and deal with the pressure's of being a dad. It's full of Satire and Politically Incorrect Humor that remains funny throughout. The Script is solid and many remember it for Aaron Eckhart's break-out role. He is simply great in this film as the evil, twisted lobbyist who's charm and wit always win you over even though he is technically the bad guy. the supporting cast is equally strong with good performances from the likes of William H. Macy, the Vermont Senator who takes on the tobacco industry. Rob Lowe as the "genius" behind Hollywood "EGO", a consultant firm which helps raise financing for movies with strategic product placement, and Katie Holmes as the seductive reporter who stops at nothing to get her story. Overall this movie has plenty of laughs, plenty of one-liners, and for any who missed it during its limited release in 2005 go seek it out it's worth the watch.

MOTD - Almost Famous

"A high-school boy is given the chance to write a story for Rolling Stone Magazine about an up-and-coming rock band as he accompanies it on their concert tour."

Almost Famous is Cameron Crowe's semi-autobigraphical story of an aspiring rock journalist who goes on tour with a band in the 1970's.Patrick Fugit, is convincing in his performance as William the shy, awkward teenager struggling to be a journalist but at the same time trying as he might to fit in. Kate Hudson, as "Penny Lane", gives plenty of depth to her smaller role but pulls it off well. Philip Seymour Hoffman, also in a small role again does very well with his portrayal of legendary rock journalist Lester Bangs, and Billy Crudup, as Stillwater's lead guitarist, is great. From start to finish the hole cast excels whether its Jason Lee as Stillwater's lead singer or Noah Taylor as the bands Manager trying to grasp hold of everything and keep them together on there road to stardom.
This film has been a Favorite of mine for many years now with its great acting, Dialogue, and most importantly The music!,which is reason in itself to watch with the huge classic soundtrack.

AOTD - Derek Sherinian - Blood of the snake

Derek Sherinian is an American ‎rock and fusion keyboardist from Los Angeles. After studying at the Berklee College of Music, Sherinian became a keyboardist and sideman for a number of artists, including Alice Cooper, Billy Idol, Yngwie Malmsteen, Kiss, Alice In Chains, and Zakk Wylde. He has also played keyboards for Dream Theater and is the co-founder of the band Planet X.

Blood of the Snake is the fifth solo album by Derek Sherinian released in 2006. It features contributions from Billy Idol, Zakk Wylde, Slash, John Petrucci of Dream Theater, Brian Tichy, Simon Phillips, Yngwie Malmsteen, Tony Franklin and Steve Lukather.

Derek is mainly Instrumental with most of the songs, but on ocasion someone lends there voice. there are two songs on this album with vocals. "Man with No Name" feat. Zakk Wylde and the cover "In the Summertime" with vocals by billy idol of all people with slash on guitar. both great songs, in the summertime sounding almost like a demo jam with everyone having some fun, keeping the vibe light. Man with no name being the harder of the two but that shouldn't be suprising with Zakk. Zakk appers on two more tracks "blood on the snake" and "the Monsoon" as you can tell i'm a Zakk Wylde fan. overall the album has a good mix of hard rock, jazz fusion and Progressive rock with plenty of instrumental mastery from all parties involved. One of his stronger albums.

MOTD - (500) Days of Summer

"An offbeat romantic comedy about a woman who doesn't believe true love exists, and the young man who falls for her."

(500) Days of Summer directed by Marc Webb came out this year mostly to a limited release and threw Sundance. I had planned to go see it in theaters but never got around too it. I got a chance to watch it yesterday and quite simpley its a fantasic film. The diologue is great throughout with amazing chemistry and great performances by both Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel The Director captures real feelings and emotion, with plenty of subtle moments of tenderness as well some moments of disaray between the two that never comes across as heavy-handed. They are two very diffrent people in reality but come together in a very natural human way that i'm sure many have experienced before, and on that note I know alot of people will relate to this film. Great film overall, check it out.

AOTD - Beach House - Devotion

Beach House is an American dream pop and indie rock duo formed in 2004 in Baltimore, Maryland. Their self-titled debut, Beach House, was named the 16th best album of 2006 by Pitchfork Media. They fallowed up there s/t release with there 2nd album Devotion in 2008 to greater acclaim and was also included in Pitchfork's best albums of 2008. The band's third album, "Teen Dream" is being released this month on January 26, 2010.

With a sound that moves the listener away from the hectic rush of everyday complex urbanity, their style is relaxing without any mundaneness. The chilling vocals and harmonies layered through it's 44min running time have an entrancing effect. A great album to listen to on those late nights walking around the city or perhaps coming home from work. Recommended tracks include; You Came To Me, Gila, and D.A.R.L.I.N.G.

MOTD - In Bruges

In Bruges is a Dark Comedy/Thriller set in the old town of Bruges, Belgium, about an Irish duo of hitmen who have been ordered by their boss to hide out there after a high-profile job in London goes bad. Their instructions are to keep a low profile, sightsee, and generally avoid trouble until further notice. But all is not as it seems.

Released in 2008, In Bruges starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson was Written and Directed by relative newcomer Martin McDonagh.

The dialogue between Gleeson and Farrell is quick, witty, and both of them manage to deliver it with some good Chemistry between them. The humour is at times very dark and even racist going for awkward/uncomfortable, and succeeds. Jabs at Gays, Americans, blacks, whites, fat people, tourists and midgets...yes midgets. At times throughout the film it will catch you off guard with Dark tense and even violent moments that really rack up the tension. But I guess thats really my only complaint is that at times the movie doesn't know what it wants to be. Never the less I enjoyed this film quite a bit. Good performances, good Location, plenty of twists. A cult fallowing that is well deserved.

"Ken: [Ray walks into the bar high on cocaine] How'd your date go?
Ray: My date involved two instances of extreme violence, one instance of her hand on my cock and my finger up her thing which lasted all too briefly - and then I was away - , one instance of me stealing five grams of very high-quality cocaine and one instance of me blinding a poofy little skinhead: so all in all... my evening pretty much balanced out, fine."

AOTD - Leonard Cohen - Live In London

Live in London is a live album by Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen. Released March 31, 2009, it is his eighteenth album, and his first live release since 2001. The album was recorded July 17, 2008 at London's O2 Arena, and was released in both DVD and as a two-CD set. I hadn't heard much of Cohen before this album, suprising considering I'm a Nick Cave fan, so this was my first taste really of his work. This album was rated on meta critic as one of the best in 2008 and for a live album its pretty good. At the tender age of 75 now! he proves he still has it and still perfoms quite well with alot of grace. His voice is incredibly rich and really matured and sounds great on this album. I discribed it to a friend as Silky Smooth lol but it really is. Great easy listening material for those late nights or relaxing days.

MOTD - Last Train To Freo

"Two thugs from the Perth suburb of Midland catch the last train to Fremantle. When a young woman boards the train a few stops later, they begin talking and find out not everyone on the train is who they seem to be."

Last Train To Freo based off a play and directed by Jeremy Sims in an interesting film. The hole movie takes place on the train, while on its journey to Fremantle. All the leads in the film particularly Steve Le Marquand and Tom Budge do a great job of racking up the tension and keep your attention throughout. I like the fact that the movie employs a small cast and really only one location. limiting a film to one location isn't the easiest of tasks but they pulled it off well. Finding this movie over here in north america might be alittle tricky and your best bet is probley online but its worth checking out.

AOTD - John Butler Trio - One Way Road

To continue the Aussie vibe of the day. One of my favorite bands of the last 3 years the John Butler Trio will be releasing a brand new album dropping in 2010 titled 'April Rising'. One Way Road is the first single from the new album and is currently being sold as an EP with a live version of One Way Road, a B-side titled "I'm Ready" and a unreleased demo of another new song "Johnny's Gone" so far a good start to the new album. Both One Way Road and I'm Ready are catchy and upbeat and will be stuck in your head before long. One Way Road is a more mainstream pop offering but infused still with John's roots to not drift to far from the overall JBT sound. I'm Ready has a more jammin, reggae vibe too it, and is a good showcase for new band members Byron Luiters on bass and Nicky Bomba, a family relative of Butler on drums. In support of the new album they will be starting a world tour starting this month January 2010. Look for more JBT here in the near future when April Uprising is released later this month.

MOTD - He Died with a Felafel in His Hand

"A search for love, meaning and bathroom solitude. Danny goes through a series of shared housing experiences in a succession of cities on the east coast of Australia. Together these vignettes form a narrative that is surprisingly reflective."

He Died with a Felafel in His Hand, based off the novel by John Birmingham and directed by Richard Lowenstein came out in 2001 to I believe a limited release. Simply put I love this film. I'm not quite sure what it is, the great performance by the always good Noah Taylor, the large cast of offbeat insane characters, the dark wit found throughout or maybe just the simple inclusion of Aussie legend Nick Cave to the soundtrack lol. Whatever it is I'll always have a place for this film. With the cult fallowing this movie has, there is still a chance that a sequel could one day be made. Although to this point it is nothing but rumors. There is a 2nd book though "The Tasmanian Babes Fiasco" and really, listen to this synopsis and tell me it wouldn't make a great film.

"When JB and his flatmates took in the new guy they had their doubts. The Celine Dion albums, the fluffy hordes of stuffed animals and the plastic-covered floral-pattern love seat should have set their threat detectors singing. But nobody was paying attention. Within days their house had become a swirling maelstrom of death metal junkies and Drug War narcs, stolen goods and hired goons, Tasmanian Babes, karate dykes, evil yuppies, dopey greens and the Sandmen of the Terror Data. Now the flatmates have one week to sober up, find two thousand dollars and catch the runaway new guy before Pauline Hanson, the federal government, cops, crims, their landlord and some very angry lesbians tear their house down and stomp them to jelly.
Can a bunch of hapless losers hope to defeat such an unholy alliance?"

AOTD - Slash's Snakepit - Ain't Life Grand

Slash formed "Slash's Snakepit back in 1994 with fellow Guns N' Roses members Matt Sorum on drums, and Gilby Clarke on the rhythm guitar. Mike Inez from Alice in Chains was on Bass, and Eric Dover sang lead vocals. GN'R members Dizzy Reed and Teddy Andreadis also appeared on the record. They released one album "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere". In 2000 Snakepit released it's 2nd and final album this time with a hole new lineup. Ain't Life Grand released in October 2000, featuring Rod Jackson on vocals, Johnny Griparic on bass, Matt Laug on drums and Ryan Roxie on guitar. While I like both albums they have released and I'll feature "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere" at a later date, I prefer "Ain't Life Grand" both have that good old rock'n roll vibe too them with as always great work by slash. It's really too bad they only released two albums. The Standouts imo the 6min "Serial Killer" "Back to the Moment" and the first song I heard by them "Shine". If you like Slash or Hard Rock in general you will enjoy Slash's Snakepit.

MOTD - Dear Wendy

DEAR WENDY is a story about the young loner Dick who lives in the poor mining town of Estherslope. When he happens upon a small handgun one day, he finds himself strangely drawn to it, despite his fervent pacifist views. Together with his newfound partner he soon convinces the other young outcasts in the town to join him in a secret club he calls The Dandies. A club based on the principals of pacifism and guns. Despite their firm belief in the most important Dandy rule of all - never draw your weapons - they soon find themselves in a predicament where they realise that rules are made to be broken.
Dear Wendy came out back in 2005. Written by the Infamous Lars von Trier and directed by Thomas Vinterberg is a strange movie if there is one word to discribe it. Original and pretty entertaining although it starts off alittle slow. But the ending makes up for it with an out there ending that might come as a suprise.

AOTD - Colin James - Rooftops & Satellites

The new album from Canada's Rock/Blues/Swing man Rooftops & Satellites released Oct 6th 2009. Some argue that it doesn't have the soul of his last album Limelight and too a degree they have a point. Not his strongest effort, if you want that than look no further than his s/t debut album. But this album does grow on you after repeated listens. It's easy goin pop rock mixed with some blues for an overall pretty good result. my Top tracks so far would have to be the very ZZ Top "Mans' Gotta Be A Stone" "Corrina" and the Bob Dylan Cover "If You've Gotta Go Go Now". My only complaint with this album he doesn't rip it up like his previous albums...More Guitar colin!

MOTD - JCVD

"Between his tax problems and his legal battle with his wife for the custody of his daughter, these are hard times for the action movie star who finds that even Steven Seagal has pinched a role from him! In JCVD, Jean-Claude Van Damme returns to the country of his birth to seek the peace and tranquility he can no longer enjoy in the United States."

JCVD from 2008 is an interesting film. Directed by french director Mabrouk el Mechri, the film fallows jcvd not as the action hero but as himself trying to deal with all the problems in his life. When he gets held up in a bank robbery it causes him to evaluate his own life. Overall a very diffrent role for jcvd unlike any of his previous action movies, this along making it worth a watch as the muscles from brussels shows you that yes he can actually act! alittle over half way in he gives a long monologue were he emotionally talks about his life, and really begs for a second chance not only in his career, but with his life. It's a great speech and the key moment in the film for many. Time will tell if his new movie coming "Eagle Path" which was written and being directed by jcvd will keep the ball rolling for him, but from this movie it looks like he may have some left in the tank.

AOTD - Porcupine Tree - The Incident

Porcupine Tree is a progressive rock band formed Way back in 1987 over in England. The Incident is there tenth studio album. It was released on September 14, 2009. the concept for the album stated by Steve Wilson the lead singer
“There was a sign saying ‘POLICE – INCIDENT’ and everyone was slowing down to rubberneck to see what had happened... Afterwards, it struck me that ‘incident’ is a very detached word for something so destructive and traumatic for the people involved. And then I had the sensation that the spirit of someone that had died in the accident entered into my car and was sitting next to me. “The irony of such a cold expression for such seismic events appealed to me, and I began to pick out other ‘incidents’ reported in the media and news,” continues Wilson. “I wrote about the evacuation of teenage girls from a religious cult in Texas, a family terrorizing its neighbours, a body found floating in a river by some people on a fishing trip, and more. Each song is written in the first person and tries to humanize the detached media reportage.”

I haven't heard a ton of Porcupine Tree I only discovered them this year and had a chance to listen to two of there albums "Lightbulb Sun" and "Fear Of A Blank Planet" both great listens btw. This new album a two disc set, while I don't know if its as good as those last two mentioned its still a fairly strong effort. The stand out song would have to be Time Files, It's really Floyd like reminding me alot of Sheep or Dogs from Animals.
